I created a simple algorithm for characterizing the efficiency of a route between any two points on the earth. I then ran that algorithm for several million points, using OSRM running on OSM data in an EC2 instance. I produced novel results about the efficiency of travel at different distances, in different countries, and in different regions of specific countries, as well as fundamental results having to do with the distribution of route efficiencies.
The map above shows the efficiency of roads around each census tract. Census tracts with no other census tract within 15 miles of their center (see ) are excluded. The draft below is not finished, but it shows the first half of the project.
