Where is the geographic center of the US? What about for any other country? The NGS "calculated" (in quotes because that calculation involved hanging cardboard from strings) a point in Kansas for the contiguous US. However, that point was not map projection independent. As it turns out, there is not a single metric for the center of a region on a sphere.
In this project, I investigated some claims made by the NGS researchers in 1912 and find a few of the centers of the US.
(Of course these methods can be used for any region on earth. This project started as an offshoot of the Axes of Historical Countries project because I wanted to use center points of historical countries for a visualization.)
